Correct ISBNs converted to scientific notation in Excel

The problem is how excel handles the typing of cells.  Excel essentially reads the first 10 cell values, and then guesses at the data type.  When you see this happening, best practice is generally to select the entire column (just the cell won’t work usually) and change the cell format type to text.  However, sometimes that doesn’t work.  And when it doesn’t, you have to use the Text to Column function.  Here’s the screenshots.

  1. Select your column

  2. Click on the Data tab in Excel 2010+, or the Data Menu in 2007-.

  3. Click on the button and you get the wizard.  Use the following settings (screenshots follow):

  4. When you get to here, click Finish and your data in the highlighted column will be reformatted.
